Have you ever wondered when making a decision, “Is this my voice or God’s voice”? God is inviting you to enter into an intimate relationship with Him so you can make the right decision. He speaks uniquely with direction and purpose. “My own sheep will hear my voice and I know each one, and they will follow me,” John 10:27. We are His sheep and the promise is we will hear His voice as He reveals remarkable secrets.
“Call unto me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you know not,” Jeremiah 33:3. The key is calling on Him through prayer and reading the Bible to discover purpose and to fulfill potential. His voice becomes a place where your heart is awakened to truth for a rewarding and exciting future.
It begins with understanding that God has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us hear His voice; we are now “joined in the Spirit to the Lord,” I Corinthians 6:17. His Spirit speaks to our spirit and gives us the ability to recognize and to know God’s voice. “There is a spirit in man and the inspiration of the Almighty gives them understanding,” Job 32:8.
Discerning His voice increases through reading the Bible and prayer, but also through rest. Have you ever heard Him speak unexpectedly when driving or doing routine things? It was because your spirit was at rest and you were not striving, so God could speak. When we strive and try hard to hear, we’re depending on our soul to reveal answers. Our soul is the emotional part of our being that continually reminds us of concerns, but doesn’t solve them. When we meditate from the soul, our thoughts turn to worry, fear, doubt or unbelief. It’s important to discern your thoughts and to know which voice you’re agreeing with. The Holy Spirit’s thoughts are filled with hope, direction and peace. The soul’s thoughts remind you of the weight you are carrying, fear, doubt or unbelief which could eventually block the voice of God.
The good news is our spirit has direct communication with Father God through the Holy Spirit. His voice comes as a friend and often as a desire. When God is speaking through the Holy Spirit, His idea is better than any idea you can think of; it’s an “aha” experience. Other voices and thoughts come from the outside that easily distract and knock you off course. God’s voice comes from within and will pierce your heart and give wisdom to fulfill God’s deepest desires. “But as it is written, eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God,” I Corinthians 2:9.
This verse refers to “them”, which is you! It’s the things God has planned for you and it’s beyond anything you could imagine. You haven’t seen it yet because it hasn’t entered into your heart. When you pray, God reveals the future to the Holy Spirit, then the Holy Spirit reveals Father’s heart to you. The Holy Spirit becomes the conduit because of your prayers and seeking God’s will.
He is inviting you to enter into a place of rest and follow His voice found in the Word: Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Calling in prayer and resting in peace increases the discerning of God’s voice. These spontaneous thoughts are given to you by the Holy Spirit. Listen and meditate on these thoughts and be assured, it is the Holy Spirit sharing God’s heart. Your thoughts are now God’s voice as His heart is revealed. Mark 11:24, “…whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Discerning God’s voice is a rewarding and exciting journey as you walk out your destiny in joy and fulfillment.
