Confronting a Familiar Spirit
With Authority in Jesus Name
Have you ever had emotional trauma where you didn’t know what to do? Katie was a troubled 20-year-old who woke up struggling to breath. Her symptoms started to increase – vomiting, extreme pain, coughing, high fever that spiked to 103.8. She was rushed to the hospital. Doctors ran 32 different tests and found nothing. After seven days, they transferred her to an infectious unit testing for meningitis, still nothing. She was in isolation with six different antibiotics, ongoing tests, doctors could not diagnose the cause of her condition. However, because of the power in Jesus’ name, when that evil, familiar spirit was confronted, all symptoms left her instantly restoring her to health. Often when doctors have trouble diagnosing a condition, it’s a clue that the root is spiritual – we then exercise our authority and command that spirit to go. “…at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,” Philippians 2:10.
The spirit that was tormenting Katie was a Familiar Spirit. All deceptive evil spirits are under the control of their master, Satan. They attach to individuals with something they are familiar or comfortable with, but keep their agenda hidden to the person. Therefore, a person can willfully form a relationship with a familiar spirit simply through innocence and/or ignorance.
Usually, the person having a familiar spirit believes that his spirit-companion is good rather than evil, or thinks that something beneficial will come out of that relationship, as with Katie. When she was five, her sister got married and left home. Due to loneliness, she adopted an imaginary playmate. Her “friend” would have tea parties with her and comfort her when she felt lonely. One day while swinging, an audible voice told her, “Your parents don’t love you like I do. I will always be your best friend.” The visitations continued and even increased by manifesting where she thought she was talking with her brother. As she continued to grow and mature, so did the spirit increase its legal right into her life. To the point, she would wake up bruised and eventually ended in the hospital near death.
Adults or children who have a familiar spirit may not recognize that it is a spirit entity with whom they are having a relationship. They may think that their experiences are only within their imaginations and fantasies. Or, they may believe that they have contacted God’s spiritual realm through their mind rather than through their spirit. Unfortunately, they may be ensnared, not because they are seeking something evil, but because they are seeking something good in a wrong way. “Lest Satan should get an advantage over us. For we are not ignorant of his devices,” 2 Corinthians 2:11.
“Our society causes many to unknowingly function under the influence of familiar spirits. These spirits operate undercover in the name of tradition, trend, fashion, lifestyle and personality traits. A familiar spirit surveys and studies people, territories, and bloodlines of families. The goal of their assignment is to gather spiritual intelligence that will open doors to instigate death and destruction. They enter and gain power in people’s lives by disguising themselves as something common or familiar while operating unawares through people, places and things,” Kim Daniels.
If a familiar spirit can capture your mind or your soul, your flesh will follow, don’t let it! When we are born again, the Spirit of God comes to live in our spirit and gives us authority. If you sense the enemy has legal right to torment or harass you, use the authority you have to command an evil spirit to leave in Jesus Name. “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you,” Luke 10:19. We fight from a place of victory because the enemy is defeated by the power in Jesus’ Name.
