Traditions are a valuable way to strengthen families and create lasting memories. They lend a certain spirit that nurtures our family connection, giving us a sense of belonging and helping us celebrate generations of family. More importantly, traditions create positive memories for our children in knowing that God’s Word is powerful and will sustain them and give them hope for the future.
With a desire to make meaningful family connections, the Lord laid on my heart to start a family tradition called, “The Christmas Blessing”. The purpose was to create a culture for spiritual inheritance and to build an atmosphere of expectancy, “What is the blessing God has for me this Christmas?” The Christmas Blessing is spoken over each family member from the youngest to the oldest. To find the right blessing, I would pray while reading the Word and ask God to give me a promise for each individual. When I found the right promise, it was an “Aha” moment. Each promise was written as a blessing and recorded on Christmas stationery. At the family gathering, while huddling around the tree, “The Christmas Blessing” was shared for all to hear. Those promises become prophetic words that were declared under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. I became God’s messenger. The desire for “The Christmas Blessing” was presented with the purpose to build a culture of faith, give hope and encourage each one to trust in God’s Word and to know it was a personal message that came directly from His heart.
You may be asking, “What is a blessing?” A blessing, according to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, is “the act or words of one that blesses,” or “a thing conducive to happiness or welfare.” In the Bible, there are several words that are usually translated as “blessing” or “bless.” The Hebrew word most often translated “bless” is Barak, which can mean to praise, congratulate, or salute. Genesis 1:22 is the first occurrence, when God blessed the sea creatures and birds, telling them to be fruitful and multiply in the earth.
This family tradition reinforces values such as belief in God’s faithfulness, integrity in decisions, personal responsibility, and the value of forgiveness and love. The blessing also provides a forum to showcase role models and to celebrate the things that really matter in one’s life as we continue to watch the blessings unfold from year to year.
My hope is you will find a family tradition and make memories that will last for generations. Enclosed is “The Christmas Blessing” I’ve written for you to read. My desire is if it witnesses to your spirit, that you receive the blessing and call it in. Job 22:28, “You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you; So, light will shine on your ways.” If it does not connect with what you are experiencing now, put it aside and use it as a model on how a blessing is written.
The Christmas Blessing
I believe the Lord would like to you to know that He’s moving exponentially in your life in the coming new year. You’ve had challenges and at times have wondered, “Did I miss something I was supposed to do?” The Lord would respond, “You are right where I want you to be. I’m working something new in your life and want a solid foundation to carry the weightiness of what I’m developing in you. I will continue to build and to increase your sphere of influence if you won’t give up and quit before the promise is completed.”
Therefore, choose to trust and push through. There is a change coming soon; a shift is taking place that was unexpected. This change is defining the next step you will be taking into greatness. You will walk with a new anointing, an increase in power and a freedom that you have not known. The reward because of your obedience, will overtake you and you will know it came from the hand of God.
God is decreeing, a new day, a new life, a new way is on the horizon. Your prayer in a certain area is finally going to bear fruit. God was waiting for the perfect timing. You will be receiving renewed vision and joy with thanksgiving to God that will break out in new levels of intimacy and praise. You are entering into the greatest breakthrough of all and you will taste and see the goodness of the Lord in your family and in your purpose.
The Christmas Blessing: Psalm 18:39-40, “You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me. You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes…now you will increase my greatness and comfort me on every side,” Psalms 71:21.
